Agua Viva - “Blooming Spell”

Agua Viva - “Blooming Spell”

Josi Arias, the multi-disciplinary artist behind Agua Viva, employs a distinct approach when crafting her compositions. The New York by way of Argentina artist thinks big picture, incorporating several mediums in pursuit of an immersive storytelling experience. In the spring, Arias shared a track called “Gateways,” which included a futuristic and dream-like video that expanded on themes of ethereality, the malleability of time, and the permeability of different dimensions. She rounded out the summer with another stunning release called “Blooming Spell,” which was also accompanied by a captivating video.

Musically, “Blooming Spell” is celestial and sublime. Arias leans into gauzy textures and hypnotic rhythms, delicately crafting a track that’s equal parts mystical and intoxicating. Layers of synths shimmer against a pulsing beat, creating a trance-like state. The chorus, with its slow bloom of sound, captures that liminal space where electro-pop, dream pop, and psychedelic swirl overlap.

The video, which was directed by Holly Overton (she’s also featured in the video), tells the story of a moon goddess that used a spell to guide a turtle to the ocean. Images of Arias in a shiny, floral decorated room are interspersed with seaside scenery. The entire video was shot on VHS, giving it a soft, nostalgic-dream world feel. That quality allows the video to lean even further into the song’s atmosphere, capturing that same nascent space between clarity and haze that the track thrives in.
