Endearments - “Cannon”
Today, Brooklyn’s Endearments is sharing their latest single, “Cannon,” along with a special music video. The band is also announcing their signing with Brooklyn-based Trash Casual, who will release their debut full-length in early 2026.
Born out of the chaos of the pandemic and a shifting musical landscape, the project of songwriter Kevin Marksson has carved out a niche in the modern synth-pop world over the course of a string of strong singles and extended plays. His lush dreamscapes are typically paired with raw, poignant lyricism, creating a uniquely emotive and danceable sound. Since their formation, Marksson has built a formidable and talented band with Anjali Nair on guitar and Will Haywood Smith behind the kit, both of whom play a big role in amplifying his deft arrangements. “Cannon” is an example of Endearments’ strengths as a fully locked-in dream pop unit.
“Cannon” showcases the tight trio hitting on all cylinders. Sitting on a pulsing rhythm section comprised of Marksson’s throbbing basslines and Haywood Smith’s firm drumming, the song’s shimmering synths spread far and wide, remaining omnipresent throughout, while Nair’s agile guitar playing weaves in and out. As the title alludes to, the song is explosive at times, particularly in the contrast between the rising choruses and the more subtle, floaty verses. And to put a bow on this stunning track, there's an absolutely captivating final refrain that boils over after a steady simmering.
The video, which was directed by Gabriel Stanley, centers on Marksson performing dramatically under flashlights in a rain-soaked void. Speaking on the single and video, Marksson says:
‘Cannon’ is a song about apathy and addiction. It’s about living in a world where we see atrocities unfolding before our eyes, yet choose to willfully ignore or self-medicate because the pain we are witnessing is so overwhelming. I knew we needed to keep the music video simple and focused on lyrics and movement. Even though I’m not a trained dancer, we worked with an amazing choreographer, Camilia Araque, who really helped me step out of my comfort zone and throw myself into the experience and emotion of the song.
