A Very Special Episode - "Neon Stars"

Brooklyn’s A Very Special Episode are experts in crafting thrilling tunes. But they’re not just a one-trick pony. In addition to making music that’ll get your heart racing, the trio does an excellent job translating their songs into the visual medium. Whether it’s the engrossing horror-themed “New Coke” (which we were stoked to premiere last year) or the kitschy-retro aesthetics of the recently released “5 Dollar Cover,” A Very Special Episode clearly understands how a cinematic video can further enhance their art. Their forthcoming second full-length, Freak Me Out, seems to be steeped in terror and its latest single, “Neon Stars,” is another preview, both visually and sonically, of what’s shaping up to be a wild ride.

The song “Neon Stars,” and its gripping visual accompaniment (which was shot and directed by Jen Meller), is another hair-raising installment in the band’s catalog. The reverb-drenched track sees the trio digging deeper into their pedal arsenal for a shoegaze-influenced delight. Moving at a bit of a slower tempo, the mixture of swirling guitars, frontperson Kasey Heisler’s ethereal vocal stylings, and the fluctuating pulsing of the bassline effectively mimics the experience of nodding off while the television blares in the background. Just as the song captures this intersection between dream state and reality, the video chronicles this phenomenon. It centers on Kristi Sun, who turns on old-looking TV on in a neon-hued room. The band appears on the screen, but Sun promptly passes out. In a trippy sequence of events, she finds herself in the dreamscape, only to be shaken out of it by the jarring, familiar ringing of an iPhone alarm.
