Mary Vision - “Fantasy (ba ba ba)”

Brooklyn’s Mary Vision are purveyors of the kind of psychedelic rock that’s easy to enjoy. Their 2020 EP, Highway, was a collection of slow-burning, hazy-feeling guitar jams that were made for baking in the midday sun. Critically, Mary Vision smartly avoided overpowering their songs with too much guitar distortion and theatrics, making Highway more of a smooth, psychedelic ride. You’d do well to light a spliff, drop the needle, and enjoy the journey. It was the kind of record to chill out and get lost in.

The project’s latest single, “Fantasy (ba ba ba),” sees them injecting a bit of pop into their psychedelic formula with stellar results. Things are a bit clearer sounding on this track. The vocals are more prominent, allowing the song’s earnest themes of vice, relationships, and memory to make a strong impact. The Mary Vision also incorporates more saccharine sonic elements, including a series of “ba ba ba” backing vocals in the verses, warm, meandering guitar riffs, an uplifting chorus, and some spritely organ playing.
