The Great American Novel - “Grabbing A Slice”

The Great American Novel - “Grabbing A Slice”

“Grabbing A Slice,” the brand new single from The Great American Novel, is named after one of New York City’s premiere food-related activities, so it’s no surprise that the song is deliciously infectious. With a lead in guitar riff that’ll string you along until you're roped right in, it’s hard not to be intrigued, especially if you enjoy the kind of hard-charging guitars that land nicely between power pop and second wave emo - sugary, but with definite emotion. The band nicely lets the guitars ebb and flow, clearing the way for Layne Montgomery’s voice to stand front and center during the verses, allowing his piercing words to resonate. His words perfectly capture that kind of lovelorn daydreaming where you’re hung up on a former flame, and the attempts to wretch them from your memory. Lines like “Wondering what she’s doing tonight, probably out grabbing a slice on her way to meet somebody nice that she probably met online” are countered by “probably gonna get on my bike, take a kinda aimless ride. Something to distract my mind.” The band also shows they can shred, peppering in some big licks at the track’s conclusion and they also work in a whole lotta sticky sweet harmonies throughout.

The band also shared an awesome video for the track, which involves pizza. Check it out below!

The Great American Novel are going through a rebirth of sorts in 2021, as after sporadic activity over the past few years, they’ll be releasing their long-awaited third album, Extremely Loud & Incredibly Online, which is set for release on August 27th via We’re Trying Records.

“Grabbing A Slice” is available on all streaming platforms and Bandcamp. Keep up with the band by following them on Instagram and liking them on Facebook.
