Freezing Cold - "Stuck On Hold" b/w "Drawn To Scale"

Freezing Cold - "Stuck On Hold" b/w "Drawn To Scale"

Brooklyn’s Freezing Cold do an excellent job blending classic emo and indie influences. Their 2019 debut full length, Glimmer, was equal parts emotive post-hardcore and scrappy indie rock with stand-out tracks like “Parentheses” and “New Ways To Visit” really threading the needle between the pounding rhythms of the former with the Eric Bachmann-esque guitar hooks of the latter. It’s a combination that’ll make lovers of good guitar music swoon and the trio take this formula a step further on their latest 7-inch, “Stuck on Hold” b/w “Drawn to Scale.”

Both songs strike an emotional chord. “Stuck on Hold” is lyrically poignant and topical, as frontperson Jeff Cunningham recounts some familiar pandemic scenes and the associated monotony with lines like “The winter waiting in the echoes, with unemployment on the phone, the clarity of being stuck on hold.” The melodic and expressive guitar parts on both tracks really give them heart, particularly on “Drawn to Scale,” as the chiming riffs in the chorus perfectly intersect with the title refrain and a series of affecting harmonies.
