Jewel Thief - "Losers"

Jewel Thief - "Losers"

Jersey City’s Jewel Thief have been doing their thing locally for the last few years. You may have seen one of their raucous performances at Pet Shop. I sure have. Their larger-than-life stage antics certainly left a mark on this gig-goer (this includes their spot-on emulation of Oasis with Child Eater during Ghost of Uncle Joe’s season). So, I was very pleased to see that they recently bottled up the energy and charisma of their live sets into two recorded singles, “Dog” and “Losers.”

“Losers” straight-up rocks. So, naturally, it’s the first Song of the Week for 2024. Jewel Thief draws from a few ‘Meet Me In The Bathroom’ era influences like The Strokes and Interpol, but their sound goes beyond mere idol worship. The thumping bassline in the intro acts like a fishing line, luring you in, until the sterling vocals briskly whisk you away. Jewel Thief also peppers some guitar theatrics throughout. There’s an especially delicious and massive guitar riff that jockeys for position around the 3:30 mark. Once it runs its course, the song suddenly ends after one more rousing chorus.
