Brainstory - “Nobody But You”

Brainstory is currently putting the finishing touches on their second full-length, but in the interim, they’ve shared another stellar 7-inch single to whet our appetites. The California trio is no stranger to the format, as releases like “Dead End” b/w “Mnemophobia” and “Breathe” b/w “Sorry” make regular appearances in my neo-soul oriented DJ sets. This most recent effort, “Nobody But You” b/w “Gift Of Life,” nicely balances two vibes that the three piece are known to capture with their music: brisk, dance-floor packing soul-funk and laid-back, soulful slow jams.

“Nobody But You” is the former, driven largely by Brainstory’s rhythm section of bassist Tony Martin and drummer Eric Hagstrom. The song’s funky bass line and steady snare drum beat are overlaid with many delectable sonic treats, including guitarist Kevin Martin’s pointed strumming, warm, soul-soaked harmonies, and bouncy keys. It’s groove-worthy. That’s for sure.
