Similar Kind - "Too Happy"

Similar Kind makes the kind of infectious, groove-laced indie-pop that’ll immediately send waves of electricity through your body. Their latest single, “Too Happy” contains many of the necessary characteristics to spark that current:  some feather-light keys, a pronounced bass funk, and front person Julia Breen’s beaming voice. All of these elements perfectly morph into a glimmering, danceable new-wave bop that channels an eclectic variety of influences, including LCD Soundsystem, Paramore, and the emotionally charged lyricism of The Smiths. Don’t get too preoccupied with your involuntary dance moves, though, as you’ll miss the deeper, relatable message of “Too Happy.” Breen described the song as exploring the feeling of “being so beaten down” and frustrated from trying to make life changes, but still running into obstacles when trying to dig yourself out of a personal funk.

This young band from Norwalk, CT is just getting started, and I’m looking forward to hearing more music. Check out their Bandcamp and follow them on Instagram.
