Snacks - “Eyes Closed”

Huntsville, Alabama quartet Snacks make songs that are dark and brooding yet rooted firmly in good pop sensibilities. In this way, they’re quite skilled at mixing light and dark. The intersection of this yin and yang can be heard when they dip harmonies in layers of echo, mixing them with pointed synthesizers, and pitter patter beats. Their two most recent singles saw them perfectly harvesting the sonic fruits of this dichotomy. “My Way” let the light peer through the clouds a bit more with its clearer sounding vocals and crisp harmonics, but “Nowadays” definitely set the level straight with its revved-up bass line and moody synths.

“Eyes Closed.” the band’s brand new single out today, feels even darker, but still maintains some of those syrupy elements. douses a sweet melody in dark atmospherics. Their healthy use of reverb gives the song a dream-like ambiance and the sticky, trebly guitar riffs provide a surf-noir meets Jesus and Mary Chain aesthetic. The stoned rhythm will have you dreaming of sunburnt summer afternoons, while the ruminative vocals, which center on themes of longing, ambivalence, and escape, evoke relatable feelings of inner turmoil.
