Steve Salett - “Spun The Wheel”

Steve Salett - “Spun The Wheel”

Veteran New York City songwriter Steve Salett has had a storied and varied career in music. Over the course of the last few decades, he’s played in several bands, performed his own music as The Poison Tree, and formed music collectives that have been a sustaining creative center for many musicians. Salett also runs Reservoir Studios in Manhattan and the Saltmines studio complex in DUMBO, Brooklyn, and recently founded his own label, Historical Fiction Records. Not content with this long list of successful projects, Salette recently decided that he wanted to share music under his own name. Last month he shared a stunning song titled “See Your Light Disappear,” and today,  we’re excited to premiere his latest release, a gorgeous track called “Spun The Wheel.”

Salett is a swanky crooner and his distinct voice is the centerpiece of “Spun The Wheel.” His words weave together a poignant tale of regret, as he assumes the perspective of a reflective older man who is taking stock of his life. In doing so, his priorities seem to shift: “What is the matter? What is the price to pay? Something you never wanted, still you let it get away. I could hold her. A soul turned to steel.” His towering voice sits atop a sparse arrangement of piano and strings, as the character is resigned to his circumstances: “I wish we could see myself while we were still kids, but I close my eyes and see the back of my lids.”

“Spun The Wheel” is a cinematic narrative that finds Salett singing from the perspective of an older man who had his chance, and is now at the end of his life and looking back over it. “It has this feel of an old movie or rather old Hollywood— some elegant and cutthroat life. The sounds of the swoopy fake strings and the torch song arrangement lends to it. But the character comes to terms with a life of lost loves and missed chances gone.”

In conjunction with the song’s release, Salett also shared a video for the track, which you can watch below.

“Spun the Wheel,” is the second single from Salett’s forthcoming album, First Landing. The record is scheduled for release on July 13th via Historical Fiction Records. You can pre-order the album via Bandcamp. “Spun The Wheel” is also available to stream on Spotify. Keep up with Salett by following him on Instagram.
