Daniel Gum ft. Rachel Cion - "The Wolverine"

We’re excited to premiere the video for “The Wolverine,” the new single from Kansas City artist Daniel Gum. Featuring gorgeous background vocals from Rachel Cion, the song gently and reflectively expounds on the vicious cycle of feeling intense heartache before even allowing yourself to love another fully and deeply. With delicate finger-picked guitars that brush against his wispy voice, Gum uses the metaphor of a wolverine to describe this kind of self-destructive obsessive-thinking and hesitation, likening it to a “glutton” that “slashes at [his] thinking heart” and takes him down, essentially holding him back, as he then flees: “Texas seems nice for a little while.” He shared the following on the inspiration behind the song’s deeper meaning:

“The Wolverine” is a one-off single and a folky homage to a fatal flaw. Like previous releases “Ruin Your Life” and “In the Worst Ways”, I continue to mourn lost love before ever loving anyone boldly enough to take a risk. The wolverine (uncommonly referred to as the glutton or the quickhatch) is the self-sabotaging companion within all of us. Though—as I closed the song out singing “Still I only think of you”, accompanied by Rachel Cion—maybe there is still a chance of shaking the glutton off.”

Today, Gum is sharing a grainy, vintage-looking video to accompany the track, which perfectly captures its essence.  Stream it below!

“The Wolverine" is out now via Manor Records. Stream it on your platform of choice. Keep up with Gum by following him on Instagram and liking him on Facebook.
