Razor Braids - "Not Dead, Not Yet"

You wouldn’t know it based on how active they are, but last week Razor Braids only released their second-ever single. They’re such an omnipresent force in the current New York City music scene and their frequent live performances are so off the walls awesome that they rival acts that already have a half dozen years of playing under their belt. The title of their latest track “Not Dead, Not Yet” is quite literal, as the band is alive, kicking, and actually very far from taking their last breath.

The isolated drums that kick off “Not Dead, Not Yet” are ominous and foreboding, setting the tone for the track’s cryptic subject matter. Front person Hollye Bynum sings of a fleeting, but impactful presence whose sudden absence leaves her shaken, but not down for the count: “Did I make you up? Just like smoke you’re gone… No, I’m not dead. Not quite, not yet. It’s an idea that I tell myself. But I'll survive the looming goodbye someway, somehow.” The song represents a bit of a change sonically when compared with their 2020 debut single, “Nashville,” in its noticeably darker and psychedelic undertones, which definitely come through in the prominently featured muscular guitars. Their dual guitars are fuzzy and face-melting in the best possible way.
