Coco Announces Release of Debut Album, Shares Video For "Knots"

Today, the mysterious group known as Coco are making their big reveal. After releasing a string of well-received singles anonymously over the course of 2020, its three members are now ready to make themselves known, and as it turns out, Coco is a supergroup of epic indie-pop proportions. Made up of Maia Friedman (Dirty Projectors, Uni Ika Ai), Dan Molad (Lucius, Chimney), and Oliver Hill (Pavo Pavo, Dustrider), the band are sharing a video for “Knots,” the fourth single from their self-titled debut, which is set for release on October 29th via First City Artists on AWAL.

Like Coco’s prior releases, “Knots” carries many of the hallmarks of a gorgeously harmonic baroque pop song. Opening with a combination of steady organ-sounding keys and airy strings, the trio really manifests something otherworldly through their soothing and peaceful harmonies, which prove to be the song’s greatest strength and defining characteristic. The accompanying video captures the band’s different living spaces at first, but then shifts focus to the trio gathering together for a meal, before again reverting to footage of each of them performing in their own spaces. It provides a glimpse into the band’s creative process, which was shaped by their pandemic-necessitated separation. Regarding the inspiration behind the video, they shared:

Knots came together a bit differently than the other songs on this record. We all live in different cities and generally get together for a couple weeks at a time with a light no-preparation rule, so the writing can take place with us all in the same room, in a retreat mindset. But Knots actually began as a virtual collaboration - Danny wrote the chords and sent it to Maia to topline, borrowing from a pop or electronic music process. Then when the next retreat rolled around, the three of us collaborated on the lyrics and arrangement to bring it home. “Will you let me in your garden again” - with both music and lyrics, we went for a lush, baroque piece with a few twists and turns, calling up a memory of someone from the deep past, or perhaps a past version of oneself.
