The Convenience - "I Got Exactly What I Wanted"

The Convenience have taken listeners on a bit of a ride across their growing catalog of music with each major release feeling quite distinct. Their earliest releases date back to 2018, when the duo of Nick Corso and Duncan Troast were firmly in the realm of warm psychedelia. Fast forward to 2021’s The Accelerator, which saw the duo morph into a much more polished and poppier project. The Accelerator proved to be a bastion of danceable tunes that drew influence from musical juggernauts in the mainstream pop and funk realms, such as *NSYNC and Stevie Wonder. Corso and Troast are not content with rehashing genres in consecutive album cycles. Instead, they’re changing their stripes once again for their latest release, “I Got Exactly What I Wanted.” It’s angular, wound up, and damn good.

Big changes can be tough for some outfits, but The Convenience adapts without much in the way of growing pains. “I Got Exactly What I Wanted” is angular and pointed, reminding me of the art-rock of Drums and Wires era XTC or a less erratic version of early Wire - a significant departure from the buoyant and glistening pop music of The Accelerator. The vocals are cool and detached, conveying a mix of sarcasm and sincerity that gives the song its charm without trying too hard to be clever.
