The Lemon Twigs - “How Can I Love Her More?”

Casual listeners may try to pigeonhole the Lemon Twigs. Deep, repeated listening to their now extensive catalog proves otherwise. Their appreciation for retro pop has assumed many complex forms on their recent output. Just compare 2023’s Everything Harmony with the string of recent singles that’ll appear on the soon-to-be-released fifth full-length, A Dream Is All We Know. The former was dark and somber, with brighter, 70s AM gold strung together by more taciturn, introspective acoustic folk songs, while what’s been shared from the latter are harmonic, sunny, and very Wilson-esque. The final single from A Dream Is All We Know, “How Can I Love Her More?,” is a prime example of the group’s chameleonic approach to retro pop.  

“How Can I Love Her More?” blends all the touchstones of baroque pop into a gorgeous, sprawling masterpiece. The track features precisely arranged instrumentation, with harpsichord, horns, theremin, flutes, and strings all playing a role in crafting a kaleidoscopic soundscape. The harmonies are pristine and tender, factoring most prominently in the delightfully ear-wormy choruses.
