Uncle Skunk - “Aussie Tender”

Uncle Skunk - “Aussie Tender”

Brooklyn’s Uncle Skunk are a mammoth live act. Their high-energy antics are reminiscent of Chicago’s Twin Peaks, which is, in turn, reminiscent of another group of legends from the Midwest, The Replacements. They’re part of a lineage of rock and roll disciples who like tearing shit up on stage. Uncle Skunk goes from 0-100 in seconds and rarely comes up for air. At least that was my experience seeing them on a frigid February evening at Our Wicked Lady, but I could tell from the amount of sweaty bodies in close proximity that my sentiment was widely shared.

But these dudes are not a one-dimensional, high-octane one-trick pony. Like Westerberg and co., they can also get introspective. Their latest single, “Aussie Tender” sees Uncle Skunk turning down the tempo and doing a little soul-searching. The jangly guitars and well-blended, Evan Dando-esque vocals drive this ear-wormy tune, which centers on themes of heartache, infatuation, and love-spurned anguish. The track, which was originally released on a B-side compilation in 2019, definitely benefits significantly from a solid reworking.
