Guided By Voices - "Meet the Star"

It feels weird these days if Guided By Voices doesn’t release two albums in a given year. Since their reformation with a new lineup in 2016, they’ve released a whopping 16 records. In 2023, they’ll release at least two full lengths. La La Land dropped in January and Welshpool Fireflies is scheduled for release next month. I wouldn’t be surprised if they go for three in 2023.

“Meet The Star” is the second offering from Welshpool Fireflies, following the May release of “Seedling.” It features many of frontman Bob Pollard’s tricks of the songwriting trade. The drums are stark and forceful, while the guitars are pointed and cutting. Pollard brings them all together with his classically imaginative lyrical style and distinctively towering voice. If you’re a fan of GBV, you won’t be disappointed.

Guided By Voices are celebrating their 40th year as a band with two special shows in their hometown of Dayton, Ohio on September 1st and 2nd. Both are sold out. They’ll also be performing on October 7th at White Eagle Hall in Jersey City. Tickets are available now.
