Desert Sharks - “Sleepy Pie”

Desert Sharks - “Sleepy Pie”

Desert Sharks have been melting faces across New York City for over a decade. Their high-energy, scuzzy, and dark take on punk has simply never gone out of style. Well, at least when they’re teeing it up. The band’s long-awaited 2019 debut album, Baby’s Gold Death Stadium, rocked my world upon its release and it continues to rattle my foundation to this day. After sharing a pair of excellent covers in 2021, the Brooklyn quartet returned last month with a new track called “Sleepy Pie,” the lead single from their forthcoming EP The Tower. As expected, it totally rocks.

“Sleepy Pie” is a perfect mix of pop, fuzz, and horror. Lyrically, the song centers on a fantastical dream girl who seems to slowly but surely consume the psyche of the object of her affection. Sonically, “Sleepy Pie” features much of the band’s bread and butter, including some absolutely menacing-sounding guitars and a foreboding rhythm section. The harmonies, which play a prominent role in the choruses, give the track a nice injection of pop, while also adding another layer of hooks.

Don’t miss Desert Sharks performing tonight for Kaleidoscope Sound’s monthly live stream. You can watch it live on Twitch starting at 7 p.m.

The band also has a series of local dates on the horizon. On April 1st, they’ll be at Sultan Room in Brooklyn. On April 6th, they’ll be playing at Pet Shop here in Jersey City with Sir Synthesis and LKFFCT.

You can preorder the band’s forthcoming EP, The Tower, on limited edition vinyl via Bandcamp. The EP is set for release on March 31st via Substitute Scene Records.
