Lady Apple Tree - “Didn’t Want To Have To Do It”

Today, Look At My Records! is excited to premiere the video for “Didn’t Want To Have To Do It,” the gorgeous new single from Lady Apple Tree. The fresh reinterpretation of the Lovin’ Spoonfuls classic is the debut release from the project of Los Angeles-based songwriter Haylie Hostetter.

Hostetter’s velvety and zealous vocal stylings are the heart and soul of this gorgeously stirring track. Her voice stands tall and firm atop a vibrant, smokey sonic palette. The song features the inimitable Sam Burton on acoustic guitar, and his emotive playing provides a layer of whimsy and color to Hostetter’s rueful ruminations on inflicting heartache on an unrelenting suitor. Burton also provides backing vocals at key points throughout, most notably shuffling in around the second verse, just as Connor "Catfish" Gallaher‘s electric guitar picks up steam. The track was recorded, mixed, and mastered by Ian Doerr onto 8-track tape at Love Magnet studios late last year, thus giving it a richly warm, analog feel.

In conjunction with the single release, Lady Apple Tree is also sharing a stunning video shot on 16mm film. The video, which was edited and directed by Jackie Lee Domi on 16mm film, interposes shots of Hostetter and her backing band performing in a dimly lit room (that curiously gets progressively darker as the song progresses) with scenes of Hostetter singing longingly into a bathroom mirror and under the mellow glow of a porchlight.

You can purchase “Didn’t Want To Have To Do It” via Bandcamp. The song is also available to stream on Spotify and Apple Music. Hostetter will be performing with Sam Burton as support on Weyes Blood's European tour next month, and her debut album is to be released in the near future. So, give the project a follow on Instagram to be in the know!
