Gyða Valtýsdóttir - "Cute Kittens Lick Cream"

We’re excited to premiere the video for “Cute Kittens Lick Cream” from Icelandic artist Gyða Valtýsdóttir. The song will appear on Gyða’s fourth full-length album, Ox, which is set for release this Friday, December 3rd. Though “Cute Kittens Lick Cream” may present itself as simple and fun through its plainspoken title, the track actually dives quite deep into a densely textured sonic pool. Gyða makes the song’s meticulously crafted layers, which include some delicately placed woodwinds, the focus. The instrumentation is light as air, creating a dewy atmosphere that waxes and wanes at key moments.

The stunning video is both warm and intimate, and the title definitely isn’t at all deceptive, as there are several cute, tiny kittens in the video. But the visuals also reflect the unadorned beauty of domestic life, where two partners simply bask in the morning sunlight while doting on their beloved pets.

Gyða shared the following on the inspiration behind the song and video:

It has always felt intriguing & in a way, a goal worth striving for, to be able to write such simple music that still reaches emotional depths. Cute Kittens Lick Cream was written during a period where I set myself the task to write one piece of music a day. It came out just like that, every take the first thing I improvised. Only at the very final stage of mixing the album, I added the clarinet & flute parts. Even if the piece sprang forth effortlessly in its simplicity, I worked meticulously on the "texture" of it, the tight weaving of the sounds so its fabric would both warm you, as well as transport you out of this realm. 

I have had the idea to make a beautiful cat video to my music for a long time. Only now did the idea line up with my artistic integrity & so it came to existence.
