Rich Girls - "Born To Run"

We’re excited to premiere the brand new video for Rich Girls’ entrancing cover of the Bruce Springsteen classic “Born To Run.” In our interview with front person Luisa Black during the July 18th edition of Local Fidelity, she described her sonic interpretation of the anthemic tune as an attempt to more accurately reflect its dark lyrical content:

It’s a song about suicide. It invokes suicide three times in the first half of the song. It’s kind of incredible. So, I wanted to re-sing it with attention to what I thought it was really about because it’s really a song about desperation and not being able to escape your circumstances. It’s quite brutal. So, slowed it way down and did kind of a goth version.

True to her words, the band’s rendition of “Born To Run” is goth-influenced, downtempo, and brooding, standing in stark contrast to the more uplifting, sing-along inducing vocals and instrumentation in the original. It’s as if Siouxsie Sioux and Robert Smith got locked in a room with Springsteen, and after a few hours, they emerged with a haunting synth-fueled version of this working-class anthem. The accompanying video is dim and shadowy with each member performing in a separate, isolated frame with sterile backgrounds. The entirely black and white video eventually shifts to a single, jet-black shot of Black that dims even further before the full trio returns to finish the song. The band shot the entire video separately on their respective iPhones during quarantine, and their visual separation really captures the feelings of hopelessness and desperation conveyed through the lyrics. It’s quite simply the perfect visual accompaniment to the band’s gloomy interpretation of the song.
