Gretchen Lieberum - "Don't Explain"

On Friday, Los Angeles artist/musician Gretchen Lieberum shared a beautiful rendition of the classic Billie Holliday tune “Don’t Explain” and a vintage-looking video to go along with it. The track features music from BAFTA award-winning composer Keefus Ciancia, who provides a rhythmic reinterpretation of the track complete with a booming brass section and Liberum’s dynamic vocals, which passionately capture the range of emotions in the lyrics. Lieberum also shared a striking black and white video to accompany the track, which was choreographed by James Alsop, shot by Sharone Meir, directed by Jacob Estes, and costume designed by Nadine Haders. In addition to choreographing the video, Alsop also plays a starring role, as her beautiful and fluid interpretive dance is front and center throughout its duration.

In a press release, Lieberum explained the choice of song and the inspiration behind the video:

I’ve loved the song Don’t Explain since I was a teenager exploring my Dad’s vast vinyl collection. Of course, it was Billie Holiday’s version that first mesmerized and haunted me, particularly the exquisite emotional expression of the anger and sadness of betrayal in the song.

James is not only a dear friend but I’m also a huge admirer of her tremendous talent as a dancer and choreographer and was thrilled when she agreed to collaborate with me on the video. Her overwhelming fierceness, charisma, power and beauty truly shine in her performance, bringing the story of the song to life.

“Don’t Explain” will appear on Lieberum’s forthcoming collaborative album with Keefus entitled This May Only Be A Dream. The album explores a collection of timeless jazz and pop songs with an entirely fresh, modern, and experimental approach, with a foundation of moody atmospheres and lush cinematics created by Ciancia.
