Gawn - "Thee Essence Ov Everything"

Gawn - "Thee Essence Ov Everything"

Thee Essence Ov Everything, the debut album from Gawn, aims to ease your mind, but it also knows how to turn it up. The new record from the Brooklyn outfit nicely mixes jangly and chill down-tempo tunes like “Pushed Aside” “Either Way,” and the instrumental “Holiday Tradition” with some more rollicking garage rock numbers like “No Light” and “Roll The Dice.” Imagine listening to a crisper version of Real Estate’s first album with a few sprinkles of The Beets thrown in for good measure and you capture the mood of Thee Essence Ov Everything - it’s a record that’s relaxed and vibing, but can kick it into high gear when the moment requires. I’m particularly fond of the album’s closer, the piano-driven “In Yr Head,” which punctuates the record with cycling guitars that eventually give way to some massive riffs to send things off into the sunset.

I had the pleasure of interviewing Zach Koenig, the frontman of Gawn, back in June. Revisit our interview in Episode 130 of Look At My Records! to learn more about the project. Order the record on vinyl now and stream it below.
