Kevin Hairs - "House of 1,000 Roommates" b/w "Clean Punk"

I’ve always enjoyed Kevin Hairs’ ability to blend several of my favorite artists and genres. His lyrics tend to have a style of dry humor similar to Robyn Hitchcock and his melodies are distinctly of the twee/indie-pop variety. The guitars are jangly in a way that falls somewhere between the lo-fi stylings of Flying Nun legends like The Clean and the crisper, clean tones heard throughout the Sarah Records catalog.

His latest releases, “House of 1,000 Roommates” and “Clean Punk,” are a bit like opposite sides of the same coin. There’s a clear cohesion between the two tracks in their playful lyricism, contagious jangle, and a whir of fuzz. “House of 1,000 Roommates” centers on Hairs echo-y voice, a steady lead riff, and a drum machine beat that pops, as he describes a not-so-ideal living situation. “Clean Punk” moves at a brisk pace, guided by another rollicking riff as Hair rattles off the virtues of organization, centeredness, and cleanliness of not only your own habitat but within your mind as well.

Hairs also recently released a video for his song, “Subdued at the VCU,” a song that appears on his April 2020 EP More Magic, More Magic.  Stream the video below.
