Lazlo’s BlowUpRadio Pride Month compilations raise funds for Trevor Project and No More Dysphoria

Words by Bennett Kelly

NJ indie rock veteran Lazlo is celebrating Pride Month with the release of two compilation albums benefitting LGBTQ+ nonprofits Trevor Project and No More Dysphoria.

Rock Against Hate volumes 7 & 8 feature over forty artists contributing previously unreleased songs, and will be available on Bandcamp starting Friday, June 6.

One hundred percent of the album proceeds will be split between the Trevor Project, the leading suicide prevention and crisis intervention nonprofit organization for LGBTQ+ young people, and No More Dysphoria, a queer-run 501(c)3 non-profit that provides financial assistance to trans and non-binary individuals through major aspects of their transitions.

Six of the artists will also have thirty minute sets, with the compilation playing between sets all weekend long at Lazlo’s longtime radio home, BlowUpRadio.com

“There is a lot of pain and suffering going on right now in America and the world,” writes Lazlo in a BlowUpRadio press release. “The LGBTQ+ community is always under attack and marginalized, but this year, the clock of progress seems to be going backwards.

“The Trevor Project and No More Dysphoria are two of many organizations working to help the community get through these trying times. I am proud that so many amazing musicians wanted to be a part of this.”

The full list of artists and songs is below.

Lazlo has long been a fundraising catalyst in the NJ indie scene. Prior Rock Against Hate volumes supported Planned Parenthood, the Trevor Project, and Kids in Need of Defense, a global organization that provides legal services to unaccompanied refugee and migrant children.

For the past 17 years, Lazlo has hosted a Spondylitis Benefit Webathon, most recently in October 2024. Spondylitis is a debilitating condition that causes inflammation and fusion in the spine, and one that is experienced firsthand by Lazlo’s wife, Naomi.

BlowUpRadio has a significant milestone this year, marking the 25th anniversary of its establishment on December 15, 2000. The heart of the station has always been supporting NJ’s underground indie rock beat.

“Some NJ (and even NYC?!?!?) stations claim to be ‘Jersey's Rock Radio,’ but their idea of ‘Jersey rock’ is playing music by Bruce Springsteen, Bon Jovi, My Chemical Romance, or other well-known NJ artists,” reads the station’s About page.

BlowUpRadio seeks to be a “refuge for people tired of mainstream radio's refusal to play New Jersey musicians regularly.”

If you’re in a New Jersey band, there’s a decent chance you’ve been on BlowUpRadio, whether you knew it or not - their database links out to the more than 1,550 NJ artists they’ve aired.

Set your Bandcamp location to New Jersey, and Lazlo should find his way to your new releases. Or, simply say hello at lazlo@blowupradio.com

He also writes a bi-weekly New & Notable NJ Music column for New Jersey Stage, and this writer is a subscriber to the weekly BlowUpRadio newsletter, which always includes a track list for the New & Notable, plus interviews and other programming paraphernalia.

Published every Sunday afternoon, this month’s newsletters have highlighted the Pride Month compilations, and usually a little glimpse into the life of Lazlo, who signs:

That's all for this week folks. Peace, Lazlo
