Mayqueen - “Order Up”

New York City’s Mayqueen have been churning out great songs since forming in 2021. Starting with the dark and brooding “Worst Nightmare,” the band has since released several notable tunes, including a brighter-sounding garage rock bop called “Oh Tell Me” and a melodically charming number titled “Alright,” which was certainly much better than its title suggests. Their most recent release, “Order Up,” may be their best effort yet, as it coalesces around a series of jangly guitar riffs and a prominent rhythm section to create an addictive two minutes and thirty-eight seconds of music.

The song’s strength rests on its earworm-y-ness in more ways than one. Lyrically, the titular phrase is used literally, but quite cleverly throughout, as it’s always followed by the sound of a chrome bell and sometimes with a backing “ding.” You know, the one that lets you know that your food is ready or calls your attention to the front of the classroom. Beyond the sharp wordplay, the song’s satisfying bassline drives it forward, while the guitar and synth interplay make “Order Up” truly unforgettable.

The cinematic video, which was directed by Kyle Sauer, stars bassist Lucy Horgan and guitarist Natasha Recoder as diner waitresses styled in vintage uniforms who get revenge on a challenging customer. If you like your vengeance mixed with some sweets, then this video will definitely grab your attention, as it features several delicious-looking cakes and pastries. But be careful, they’re deadly!

Horgan shared the following on the inspiration behind the video:

I am an avid horror fan, and making this video felt like realizing my dream of someday making a scary movie. We came up with the concept, and were so lucky to work with Kyle who created the entire storyboard and found an amazing team to execute. There are already so many love songs out there, so we decided to spice things up with a touch of murder. There’s nothing more sweet than poison cherry pie at a vintage diner, served by two of the bitchiest waitresses you’ve ever met.
